What Is Geotextile?

Geotextile is a permeable synthetic textile material used in civil engineering and construction projects to improve soil performance and provide separation, filtration, reinforcement, drainage, and protection.

The term geotextile combines “geo,” meaning earth or ground, and “textile,” referring to a textile material. Geotextiles are commonly manufactured from durable polymers such as polypropylene (PP) and polyester (PET).

Types of Geotextiles

Geotextiles are mainly classified according to their manufacturing method into woven and non-woven geotextiles.

Woven Geotextiles

Woven geotextiles are manufactured by interlacing yarns in two perpendicular directions, similar to conventional woven fabrics. They generally provide high tensile strength and dimensional stability, making them suitable for applications requiring reinforcement and separation.

Non-Woven Geotextiles

Non-woven geotextiles are produced from continuous filaments or short fibers bonded together through thermal, chemical, mechanical, or combined processes.

They are commonly used where filtration, drainage, separation, and protection are required.

Key Functions of Geotextiles

Geotextiles provide several important functions in civil engineering and infrastructure projects:

1. Separation

Geotextiles prevent the mixing of adjacent soil layers with different properties.

For example, they can separate soft subgrade soil from coarse aggregates while helping maintain the drainage and load-bearing characteristics of the structure.

2. Filtration

The permeable structure of geotextiles allows water to pass through while restricting the movement of soil particles.

3. Reinforcement

Geotextiles can improve the overall performance of soil structures by providing tensile reinforcement and helping distribute loads.

They are commonly used in roads, embankments, retaining structures, slopes, and soil stabilization projects.

4. Protection & Waterproofing Systems

Non-woven geotextiles can be used as a protective layer around geomembranes and waterproofing systems, helping reduce the risk of mechanical damage during installation and operation.

In asphalt applications, specially designed geotextile systems can also be incorporated between existing and new pavement layers to help control moisture movement and reduce certain pavement-related problems.
